India's Administrative Data Can Reshape Evidence-Based Policymaking

India's Administrative Data Can Reshape Evidence-Based Policymaking

Sometimes the government of India wants to know how people live, so it asks thousands of families questions about jobs, health and school.

That is called a survey, and it gives very useful answers.

But surveys take a long time to finish, and by then things may have changed.

Today, computers also save small facts when people pay with their phones, send tax forms, or go to the hospital.

These saved facts are called administrative data.

Smart leaders say we should use both the surveys and the administrative data together.

The surveys can show things like how happy families are or the work people do without pay.

The administrative data can show what is happening in the country much faster, like during the Covid-19 sick days when it helped deliver food and vaccines.

When we connect the information carefully and keep it safe, leaders can make better decisions for everyone.
