Study: Gen Z Faces Unprecedented Levels of Despair and Anxiety
Researchers have found that young people today, called Gen Z, are feeling more sad and anxious than people their age used to.
This is happening in many countries.
Unlike older generations who might have felt their worst in middle age, Gen Z seems to feel worse when they're young, and things get a little better as they get older.
Studies show this is because more young people are struggling with their mental health.
For example, fewer Gen Z members rate their mental health as excellent compared to when Millennials were the same age.
Also, more young men and women are reporting poor mental health compared to the past.
Study finds that Gen Z experiences high levels of despair and anxiety.
Researchers observed a 'ski slope' pattern of unhappiness in Gen Z, starting high and easing with age.
The research spanned 44 countries, including the US and the UK.
Poor mental health among young men rose from 2.5% to 6.6% between 1993 and 2024.
Only 15% of Gen Z rated their mental health as excellent in a 2023 survey, a decrease from previous generations.
