Indian National Sentenced for $1.17M Medicare Fraud
An Indian man named Mohammed Asif was caught doing something very wrong.
He owned a lab in Washington that was supposed to do medical tests for people.
But instead of doing the tests, he tricked the government into paying him millions of dollars for tests that were never done.
He even took money for tests on people who had already died.
The government found out and put him in jail for two years.
He also has to pay back all the money he stole.
This is a big deal because the money he stole was meant to help old and sick people get the care they need.
Mohammed Asif, an Indian national, was sentenced to 2 years in prison for Medicare fraud.
He billed Medicare $1.17 million for COVID-19 and other tests that were never ordered or performed.
Asif was the owner and director of American Labworks LLC, a diagnostic lab in Everett, Washington.
The lab billed Medicare over $8.7 million and received over $1.1 million in payments.
Asif is ordered to pay $1,174,813 in restitution and faces deportation after his sentence.
