Singur Dam Repairs Delayed for Further Review
The Singur dam needs urgent repairs, but there's a disagreement about how much water to release.
The government's technical committee decided to lower the water to 517.5 meters first, then decide if it needs to go down further to 510.6 meters.
The irrigation department wants to lower it all the way to 510.6 meters to properly fix the dam, but the water board and Mission Bhagiratha officials say that would cause a big water shortage in Hyderabad and other areas.
They also say it would be very expensive and difficult to supply water by tankers while the dam is being repaired.
The committee will make a final decision after the water level reaches 517.5 meters.

Irrigation department insists on full depletion to 510.6 m for proper damage assessment and repairs
Water board and Mission Bhagiratha officials warn of drinking water crisis if water level is reduced to 510.6 m
Estimated cost of supplying water by tankers is Rs.150 crore/year, with additional monthly revenue loss of Rs.20 crore for water board
Alternative water source from Kaleshwaram project would take at least a year to implement
