AAP MP Introduces Bill to Criminalize Sacrilege
A politician named Raghav Chadha from the Aam Aadmi Party introduced a new law in Parliament.
This law wants to make it a very serious crime to disrespect or harm religious books like the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Quran, and Bible.
If this law passes, people who do such things could get the highest punishment.
The politician said that in the state of Punjab, there have been many cases of such disrespect, and the state government has also introduced a similar law.
Some people are worried that this law might go against the idea of a secular country and limit freedom of expression.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha introduced a private member's bill to criminalize sacrilege against religious texts.
The bill proposes amending the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 to include maximum punishment for sacrilege.
Religious texts covered include the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Quran, and Bible.
Punjab has introduced a similar bill proposing life imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 10 lakh for sacrilege.
Critics argue the bill threatens constitutional values and freedom of expression.
