Sovereign Gold Bonds Deliver High Returns, But Tax Rules Apply
Imagine you bought a special kind of government bond that's tied to the price of gold.
These bonds, called Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), have been giving people really big returns lately, sometimes over 300%!
You also get a small yearly interest payment, like a bonus.
The best part is that if you keep the bond for the full 8 years or redeem it early directly with the government, you don't have to pay any taxes on the profits you made from the gold price going up.
However, if you sell it on the stock market before it's supposed to end, you might have to pay taxes on your profit.
Also, the yearly interest you get is always counted as your income and is taxed.
So, while the bonds are making lots of money, it's important to know how and when you get your money out to save on taxes.
Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued by the RBI are maturing or eligible for early redemption, providing substantial returns up to 325%.
Returns are driven by a significant increase in gold prices over the past few years.
Capital gains from SGBs are tax-free if held until maturity (8 years) or redeemed early directly with the RBI.
Selling SGBs on the stock exchange before maturity results in taxable capital gains (short-term or long-term).
The 2.5% annual interest earned on SGBs is always taxable as 'Income from Other Sources'.
