Lakadong Turmeric, Eco‑Zones, Mekedatu and Brahmaputra Floods Highlight Key Issues
Lakadong turmeric is a special kind of turmeric that grows in Meghalaya.
The Indian government wants to help farmers grow more of it and sell it around the world, so they started a big project called Mission Golden Spice.
The plan will take five years and has two parts: first, make the supply chain better, then grow more.
In other parts of India, there are special zones around forests and wildlife parks where people are not allowed to mine or build big factories, but they can do things like grow crops or run small hotels.
In the south, Karnataka wants to build a big dam called Mekedatu on the Cauvery River, but Tamil Nadu is worried it will change how much water flows to them.
In the north, the rivers Dikhow, Disang and Dhansiri, which feed into the Brahmaputra, have flooded badly, hurting many people.
Lakadong turmeric, a GI‑tagged variety from Meghalaya, is the focus of a ₹175.45‑crore Mission Golden Spice initiative to boost cultivation and global marketing.
The Ministry of Development of North‑East Region announced a phased, five‑year roadmap (2025‑2030) for the project, split into value‑chain strengthening and expansion phases.
Eco‑Sensitive Zones around protected areas restrict activities such as commercial mining, while permitting regulated tourism and agriculture.
The Mekedatu balancing reservoir on the Cauvery River, proposed by Karnataka, has sparked a dispute with Tamil Nadu over water sharing and downstream releases.
The rivers Dikhow, Disang and Dhansiri, tributaries of the Brahmaputra, have recently experienced severe flooding in Assam.
