Gujarat reports high custodial deaths in 5 years
Gujarat has had a lot of people dying while in police custody over the past five years.
The police say they acted in self-defense in some cases, but others died from illness or suicide.
In 2021, a man and his son were shot by police, and in 2025, another man was shot during an encounter.
The government's reports show that Gujarat and Maharashtra have the most custodial deaths in the country.
Many of these deaths happen to people who are not yet in court custody.
Some police officers have been accused of wrongdoing, but not all cases have been fully investigated.
Gujarat reported 75 custodial deaths between 2019 and 2023, with 13 in 2023 alone.
The leading causes of custodial deaths in Gujarat are illness and suicide.
In 2021, police shot and killed Hanifkhan Jat Malek and his 14-year-old son, claiming self-defense.
In 2025, Vipul Parmar was shot and killed by police during an encounter.
Most custodial deaths in Gujarat occur while individuals are 'not in remand,' meaning they have been arrested but not yet produced before court.
