Parliamentary Panel Urges Nationwide Mandatory Cancer Reporting in India

Parliamentary Panel Urges Nationwide Mandatory Cancer Reporting in India

A parliamentary committee wants every cancer case in India to be officially reported.

This would help the government understand where cancer is happening and how common it is.

India estimated about 15.6 lakh new cases in 2024.

Cancer also causes about 8.2 lakh deaths each year, according to the article.

India already has a cancer registry, but it covers only around 16% of people.

Cancer reporting rules currently exist in 17 states and Union Territories.

The Union government has hesitated because health is mainly handled by the states and cancer is usually considered non-communicable.

Supporters say better information could help prevent cancer, find it earlier, and improve treatment planning.
