Kerala Launches Joint Field Study on Rare Brain Infection After 30 Deaths
A rare and very dangerous germ called the 'brain-eating amoeba' can get into people's brains and make them very sick.
This germ caused 30 people in a place called Kerala to pass away.
To understand how this happens and to help stop it, doctors and scientists have started a special project.
They are looking closely at where people might get this germ, like in dirty water.
Kerala is also trying to find sick people very quickly and give them special medicine.
Because they are so good at this, fewer people in Kerala get very sick from it compared to other places in the world.
They are also telling people how to stay safe, like not splashing dirty water into their noses.
This helps keep more people healthy.
Kerala has launched a joint field study with the National Institute of Epidemiology to investigate amoebic meningoencephalitis.
The study is focusing on districts like Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Malappuram.
The state has recorded 30 deaths from the rare brain infection caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba.
Kerala's early detection and treatment measures have significantly lowered the mortality rate to 20-24%, compared to the global average of over 95%.
Preventive measures include avoiding stagnant water, using nose plugs while swimming, and ensuring water bodies are clean.
