Mizoram to revert to Jan-Dec academic calendar from 2027-28
Mizoram, a state in India, has decided to change its school year schedule.
Starting from 2027, schools will go back to starting in January and ending in December, instead of the current April to March schedule.
This change is because the state's weather, landscape, and people's daily lives fit better with the January-December schedule.
The decision was made after talking to many groups, teachers, and parents, and most people agreed with this change.
Schools for younger students will follow this new schedule, but high schools (classes 11 and 12) will keep the current schedule.
The government also decided to stop using the same school uniform for all government schools and will no longer give ranks or distinctions in exam results to focus on better learning.
However, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a student organization, has asked the government to continue publishing merit lists to maintain healthy competition among students.
Mizoram will revert to the January-December academic calendar from the 2027-28 academic year, considering the state’s climate, topography, and people’s lifestyle.
The decision was made after consulting with 231 organizations, teachers, and parents, with 92.2% supporting the January-December cycle.
Primary and high school students will follow the January-December cycle, while classes 11 and 12 will continue with the April-March cycle.
The government will discontinue the use of common school dresses for all government schools from the next academic session.
The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) will declare results for classes 10 and 12 without awarding distinction, division, or ranks to focus on quality education, a decision opposed by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP).
