MCA Seeks Wankhede Lease Renewal, Reclaiming Azad Maidan Land

MCA Seeks Wankhede Lease Renewal, Reclaiming Azad Maidan Land
MCA seek Wankhede Stadium lease renewal from Maharashtra govt; also request to reclaim Azad Maidan land taken over for metro construction · indianexpress.com

Imagine cricket fields are like playgrounds for kids.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) asked the state's leader to let them keep using their main playground, Wankhede Stadium, for a longer time.

They also asked if they could get back a big part of another playground, Azad Maidan, which was taken away to build a subway for trains.

This part of Azad Maidan used to be where lots of cricket games happened, but now it's smaller and many old cricket clubs can't play there anymore.

The MCA wants to bring back games to these historic spots.

The leader said he would look into these requests and help make things happen faster.

They also want to add better seats for people to watch games at another ground.

“There are clubs in the maidaan which have a rich history. They are more than 100 years old and it has been a nursery to many Indian cricketers. We want those grounds so that more matches can be held in the city.”

Jayant Zaveri

secretary of Fort Vijay

“Our club has a rich history. We have a pavilion in the name of the late Vijay Merchant. Since the time metro construction work took place, our plot was taken by the government and no cricketing activity has been held here since. The part of the plot instead is used for rallies. We are hoping to get our ground back so that our rich legacy is taken forward and cricketing activities resume after so many years.”
