Karnataka to Seek Denotification of Forest Land Grants
Imagine some people were given land to farm on a long time ago, but then the government said that land was part of the forest.
These people couldn't officially own the land, even if they'd been farming it for years.
Now, the government wants to help them by asking the central government and Supreme Court to remove the forest protection on those lands.
This would allow these people to finally have rights to the land they've been using.
They are also discussing the possibility of reducing the buffer zone around a sanctuary to ease the impact on local residents.
Karnataka government will seek denotification of land granted before forest notification.
The move aims to help those cultivating land for decades without ownership rights.
The government will approach the Supreme Court regarding this matter.
Elected representatives opposed the 10 km buffer zone around a sloth bear sanctuary.
A proposal to reduce the buffer zone to 1 km has been submitted.
