Trump DOJ threatens states’ welfare aid over migrant reporting

The Justice Department wants states to tell federal immigration officials about people who are in the United States without legal status.

This rule would apply to information held by many state agencies, not just welfare offices.

Universities and motor vehicle departments could have information that the federal government wants reported.

The government says states could lose welfare money if they do not follow the rule.

The money comes from two programs called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Supplemental Security Income.

People without legal status are not eligible for these programs.

Some states, especially Democratic-led states, may sue to stop the broader information-sharing requirement.

Courts have already blocked or limited some similar efforts by the administration.
