BMC uncovers 3,167 'ghost' hawker licences in QR-code drive
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai started a project to give special QR code cards to legal street vendors.
They found out that 3,167 vendors who were listed as legal in a 2014 survey have passed away.
Now, the BMC is thinking about letting the families of these vendors take over their licences.
At the same time, they are making a list of all legal vendors and plan to take stronger action against illegal vendors.
This project started in May 2023 and involves almost one lakh vendors.
BMC found 3,167 'ghost' hawker licences during a QR-code drive.
The drive aims to issue QR code-enabled identity cards to authorised hawkers.
BMC is considering transferring licences to the kin of deceased hawkers.
A verified database of nearly one lakh authorised hawkers is being created.
Action against illegal vending is being intensified across Mumbai.
