Apple details iPhone Duo hinge and foldable display engineering
Apple made a foldable phone called the iPhone Duo.
It has one large screen inside and a smaller screen outside.
Apple says the phone’s hinge has more than 100 parts.
Engineers adjusted the hinge so it feels strong and smooth, like closing a good car door.
The inside screen has a special matte surface to reduce glare.
This surface may also make the fold in the screen less noticeable.
Apple says people should avoid adding third-party screen protectors.
The company tested the phone for conditions meant to represent about five years of everyday use.
Apple says it extensively fine-tuned the iPhone Duo hinge to feel solid when opened and closed.
The hinge contains more than 100 components and was designed with durability and long-term reliability in mind.
The foldable phone has a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer screen and a matte nano-texture coating.
Apple cautions users against third-party screen protectors and says the display coating balances scratch resistance with wear resistance.
Hardware Engineering Vice President Tom Marieb says Apple tests devices against conditions representing about five years of real-world use.
