UGC Equity Rules Spark Protests, Government Clarifies
A BJP leader named Shashi Tomar resigned from her position because she disagrees with new rules made by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
These rules are meant to stop caste discrimination in colleges and universities by setting up special committees to help students from certain groups.
However, Tomar and other people think these rules might actually increase discrimination and cause problems.
Students have been protesting, asking the government to change or remove these rules.
The government says the rules won't be misused, but some people are still worried.
There are also legal challenges to these rules in the Supreme Court.
Some government officers in Uttar Pradesh have also resigned in protest, saying the rules are unfair to certain groups.
The government has suspended some of these officers and said that bureaucracy should not be involved in politics.
The government is now expected to clarify concerns regarding the UGC's new regulations on promoting equity in higher education, which have sparked widespread protests, particularly from general category students.
The Ministry of Education has been deliberating extensively and examining all aspects of the regulations.
The UGC introduced the Equity Regulations to address caste-based discrimination faced by students from reserved categories in higher education institutions (HEIs).
Under the rules, all universities and colleges are mandated to establish an Equal Opportunity Centre (EOC) and campus-level committees to inquire into discrimination complaints and promote equity and inclusion.
The All India Students Association (AISA) supported the regulations, calling them the result of years of institutional failure, but flagged concerns over vague definitions of discrimination and inadequate representation of SCs, STs, OBCs, and women in equity committees.
In response to the backlash, the government said it would include a provision to ensure that complaints from general category students are also addressed.
Shashi Tomar, a BJP office bearer, resigned over new UGC equity regulations aimed at stopping caste discrimination in higher education institutions.
The regulations mandate the formation of special committees to investigate discrimination complaints and promote equity, including representation from OBCs, SCs, STs, women, and persons with disabilities.
Protesters, including students and some government officers, argue that the rules could increase discrimination and cause confusion, leading to protests in Delhi and resignations in Uttar Pradesh.
The government assured that the rules would not be misused or cause discrimination, but legal challenges have been filed in the Supreme Court.
The Union government is expected to soon clarify concerns regarding the UGC's new regulations on promoting equity in higher education, which have sparked widespread protests, particularly from general category students.
