EPFO Raises Wage Ceiling to Expand Worker Social Security
The government has raised the monthly pay limit for automatic EPFO coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000.
The change started on 17 September 2026.
It may bring more than 51 lakh additional workers into mandatory coverage across India.
Covered workers can build retirement savings through the Employees’ Provident Fund.
They may also receive pension and employment-linked insurance protection under applicable rules.
Contributions can reduce take-home pay, but they help create savings for the future.
The change is also intended to encourage formal jobs and make workplaces more stable.
EPFO offices will help employers and workers understand and follow the new rules.
Employers have also been asked to file accurate records and use available enrollment and settlement programs.
Mandatory EPFO coverage wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month effective 17 September 2026.
More than 51 lakh additional employees nationwide are expected to enter mandatory EPFO coverage, subject to applicable provisions.
Expanded coverage provides access to EPF savings, EPS pension protection and EDLI employment-linked insurance.
The government estimates annual expenditure of approximately ₹11,339 crore and five-year expenditure of ₹56,696 crore.
EPFO offices in Telangana and Indore urged compliance, accurate filings and participation in enrollment and settlement initiatives.
