Ford to Revive Chennai Plant for Next-Gen Engine Production
Ford, a car company, is going to start making car engines again at its factory in Chennai, India.
They stopped making cars there a few years ago.
This factory will now build new, advanced engines for cars that will be sent to other countries.
Ford is spending a lot of money to get the factory ready.
They expect to start making these new engines around the year 2029.
This project will create many new jobs for people in the area.
Ford had previously struggled to gain a large market share in India.
Ford Motor Company will reopen its Chennai plant in Tamil Nadu, India, to manufacture next-generation, high-tech engines primarily for export.
The company plans to invest approximately Rs 3,250 crore ($366 million USD) to retool the facility, which ceased vehicle production in 2021.
This initiative is part of Ford's global 'Ford+ transformation plan' to utilize India's manufacturing capabilities for international operations.
The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 235,000 engines, with commercial production slated to begin around 2029.
The project aims to create over 600 direct jobs and reinforces Tamil Nadu's position as an automotive hub.
