Study Finds No Link Between Popularity and Academic Quality in Kids' YouTube Videos
A recent study looked at almost 49,000 videos from popular children's YouTube channels to see if the number of views a video gets is related to how educational it is.
The researchers used a special computer program to check if the videos could help kids answer questions from their school textbooks.
They found that videos with lots of views aren't always the most educational.
Some very popular channels, like ABCKidTV, didn't score well on educational value, while others like Kids Learning Tube and Sesame Street did better.
The study suggests that parents and educators should be careful when choosing educational content for kids, as popularity doesn't always mean the video is helpful for learning.
Researchers analyzed 48,956 videos from 134 popular children's YouTube channels.
They found no clear relationship between video popularity and academic quality.
A machine comprehension system was used to test videos against textbook questions.
The best-performing model achieved 77.5% accuracy in answering textbook questions.
Channels like Kids Learning Tube and Sesame Street had higher academic quality, while ABCKidTV had high viewership but low academic quality.
