India’s GDP Growth Figure Rekindles Debate Over Data Credibility

India announced that its economy grew 7.8% in real terms during the first quarter of FY27.

Some analysts say this number looks stronger because the earlier year’s comparison figure was lowered.

They also question why the GDP deflator was only 2.5% when several inflation measures were higher.

Using different assumptions, they estimate real growth could be closer to 4%.

The government’s statistics ministry has defended its approach with an example involving manufacturing costs and prices.

The new GDP series also revised earlier economic estimates downward by about ₹42 trillion.

Critics say missing or delayed surveys made older estimates less reliable, especially for informal businesses and household spending.

They want the statistics authorities to publish data that consistently links the old and new GDP series.

Until then, they say the 7.8% figure should be viewed as provisional rather than final.
