Surrinder Kumar Pioneers Indian Single Malt Whisky
A man named Surrinder Kumar helped create the first Indian single malt whisky.
He worked at a company called Amrut and made a special whisky that people in Scotland liked a lot.
This whisky, called Amrut, became very popular, and later, Kumar made another whisky called Indri-Trini, which became the best-selling single malt in India.
He used different kinds of barrels to make the whisky taste unique.
People all over the world now recognize Indian whisky as something special, not just a cheaper version of Scottish whisky.
Kumar is still working on new kinds of drinks, like rum and vodka, and he is very good at his job because he pays a lot of attention to how things smell and taste.
Surrinder Kumar created India's first single malt whisky, Amrut, in 2004.
Amrut's success was boosted by a positive review from whisky critic Jim Murray in 2010.
Kumar later developed Indri-Trini, which became India's largest-selling single malt by 2024.
Indri-Trini uses a unique triple-wood maturation process for its distinct flavor.
Indian single malt sales surpassed imports, with over 410,000 cases sold in 2025.
