Brazil fines TikTok owner ByteDance over teen data violations

Brazil’s data protection authority fined ByteDance, which owns TikTok.

The fine is worth 153.8 million reais, or about $29.81 million.

Officials said the company used personal information from teenagers aged 13 to 18 without a valid legal reason.

ByteDance must delete some of that information within 60 business days.

It must also tell other organizations that received the data.

The company must provide a technical report and computer audit records.

If it does not follow the order, it could be fined 137,081.49 reais each day.

ByteDance can receive a 25% reduction if it gives up its appeal and pays on time.
