Assam Seeks ST Status for Six Communities
The Assam government has sent a proposal to the central government in India asking for six communities to be given special status called Scheduled Tribe (ST).
These communities are Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes.
The central government has received this proposal and is looking into it.
There is a process where the proposal is checked by different offices like the Registrar General of India and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.
The Assam Cabinet had already approved this proposal in November 2025.
However, a group called the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA) does not agree with this proposal.
Assam government proposed ST status for six communities: Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes.
Centre received the proposal and is examining it through the RGI and NCST.
Assam Cabinet approved the proposal in November 2025.
CCTOA rejected the proposal, acting on the recommendation of a consultative group.
Proposals for ST status follow a specific process involving ethnographic reports and examinations.
