Maharashtra Defends Special Public Security Act Against Court Challenge

Maharashtra is defending a law called the Maharashtra Special Public Security Act in court.

The government says the law is needed to address unlawful and extremist activities, including urban Maoist networks.

It cited figures saying 64 active organisations described as fronts operate in Maharashtra, the highest number in the country.

The law applies to certain activities linked to Left Wing Extremist organisations or similar bodies.

It lists offences such as belonging to an unlawful organisation or helping it in certain ways.

The government wants the court to reject challenges to the law and says the petitioners have not shown direct legal harm.

The Congress, the Communist Party of India and social activists are among those challenging it.

They argue that the law gives officials too much power to ban organisations and take their property.

The court gave the petitioners time to respond to the government’s affidavit.
