China Upgrades Djibouti Base to Expand Regional Monitoring Reach

China Upgrades Djibouti Base to Expand Regional Monitoring Reach

China has added new communications equipment to its military base in Djibouti.

A U.S. research group studied satellite pictures of the base.

The group says the new equipment may help China watch military activity in the Middle East and Africa.

It may also help Chinese forces communicate with commanders in China.

The equipment can send and detect many kinds of signals.

Researchers could not confirm whether China is actively intercepting communications.

The base opened in 2017 near an important shipping route.

Other countries, including the United States, France, Italy and Japan, also have military bases nearby.

China’s embassy in Washington did not immediately comment on the report.
