U.S. Discloses On-Orbit Weapons as Space Warfare Expands
The United States says it has weapons that can operate in space.
Officials say these weapons could help protect American forces and satellites.
They have not explained exactly what the weapons are.
Some possible tools include satellites that move near other satellites.
Robotic arms might interfere with spacecraft.
Lasers, microwaves, cyberattacks, and signal jamming could also disrupt systems.
A spacecraft might even be forced to move repeatedly until it runs out of fuel.
Lt Gen P.J.S. Pannu said this may show that space warfare capabilities are becoming more openly acknowledged.
U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said America possesses “on-orbit space control weapons.”
The United States has not revealed whether the weapons are kinetic or non-kinetic, or how they operate.
Lt Gen P.J.S. Pannu said the disclosure may confirm existing capabilities rather than announce entirely new ones.
Potential space-warfare tools include co-orbital satellites, robotic arms, lasers, microwaves, cyberattacks, spoofing, and jamming.
Pannu said satellites could also be disabled by forcing them to maneuver until their limited fuel is exhausted.
- Who
- The United States, U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, and retired Lt Gen P.J.S. Pannu.
- What
- The United States publicly acknowledged possessing on-orbit space-control weapons, without describing them in detail.
- When
- The disclosure was described as the first public acknowledgment of this kind; no specific date was provided.
- Where
- In orbit and in remarks on WION’s Defence Pulse.
- Why
- The weapons are intended to defend U.S. forces and protect the communication links supported by American satellites.
- Disclosure
- Troy Meink acknowledged that the United States possesses “on-orbit space control weapons.”
- Weapon details
- The United States has not said whether the weapons are kinetic or non-kinetic, or how they function.
- Possible capabilities
- Potential methods include co-orbital satellites, robotic arms, directed energy, high-power microwaves, and kinetic vehicles.
- Electronic and cyber methods
- Cyberattacks, spoofing, and jamming could target satellite communications and command links.
- Fuel-exhaustion tactic
- An adversary’s satellite could potentially be forced to maneuver repeatedly until it exhausts its fuel.
- Expert assessment
- P.J.S. Pannu said the disclosure may not represent the sudden arrival of a new capability.
