Odisha Launches India's First Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Plant
India is building its very first factory to make special computer chips called silicon carbide chips.
The groundbreaking for this new factory happened near Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
These chips are important for things like electric cars and clean energy because they can handle a lot of power.
The company building it is called SiCSem, and they plan to finish it by 2027 or 2028.
The government is excited about this project, hoping it will bring new technology and jobs to the area.
They are even partnering with a local university to do more research.
SiCSem Private Limited held a groundbreaking ceremony for India's first end-to-end silicon carbide semiconductor production plant.
The plant, located near Bhubaneswar, Odisha, involves an investment of approximately Rs 2,000 crore.
The facility is expected to be operational by 2027-28, with a capacity to process 60,000 SiC wafers annually.
Silicon carbide chips are crucial for high-voltage applications in sectors like renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed support and encouraged Odisha to develop a Data Centre policy.
