Dismantling of 111-Year-Old Pamban Bridge Begins
A very old bridge called the Pamban Railway Bridge, which is 111 years old, is being taken apart.
This bridge was built in 1914 to connect an island called Rameswaram to the mainland.
It was special because parts of it could be lifted and lowered by people to let ships pass through.
The bridge was damaged in a big storm in 1964 but was fixed and used again.
Now, a new bridge has been built, and the old one is being removed.
Some people want the old bridge to be saved and put in a museum so everyone can see it.
The new bridge is different because it has a part that goes up and down using electricity to let ships pass.
The old bridge is being taken apart in pieces, and it will take about four months to finish.
The 111-year-old Pamban Railway Bridge, connecting Rameswaram island to Mandapam, is being dismantled.
Locals have requested the historic bridge be preserved in a railway museum.
The bridge, built in 1914, was the first sea bridge in India with sections lifted/lowered by human power.
A new bridge, inaugurated in April 2025, features an electric hoist for ships to pass.
The dismantling process, costing Rs. 2.53 crore, is expected to take four months.
