Ladakh Denied Statehood, Offered Unique Elected Body With Powers

Ladakh Denied Statehood, Offered Unique Elected Body With Powers

The government says Ladakh will not become a state or get its own legislature.

Instead, it proposes a special elected body with legislative, executive and financial powers.

Officials say this model would be unique in India.

The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance have discussed direct elections for it.

These groups have been asking for statehood and protections for Ladakh’s land, culture and environment.

They say the latest talks did not explain how much power the body would have, especially over law and order.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk said the talks were friendly but did not produce a real result.

The groups may hold a march from September 19 to 24 if no concrete proposal arrives within a week.
