IPS Officer Bushra Bano Transferred Amid Row Over Greetings

Bushra Bano is a police officer in West Bengal who made a video for students preparing for civil-services exams.

She talked about her own studies and the help she received from a coaching academy at Aligarh Muslim University.

She began the video with the Muslim greeting “Assalamu Alaikum.”

She also used the words “Inshallah” and “Jazakallah.”

Some Hindu groups said a uniformed government officer should use religiously neutral or national expressions in public messages.

Soon afterward, Bano was moved from her police post in Kharagpur to another police assignment.

The government order said the transfer was made in the “public interest.”

Opposition politicians and some supporters of Bano questioned whether the timing suggested discrimination.

The government and transfer defenders said the state has the authority to make administrative postings.
