Why Student Progress Should Mean More Than Marks

Why Student Progress Should Mean More Than Marks

Good marks can show that a student understands some schoolwork.

But marks cannot show everything about how a child learns and grows.

Children may also develop creativity, curiosity, confidence and communication skills.

Different students have different interests and strengths.

One child may enjoy science, while another may prefer music, sport or reading.

Parents and teachers should notice how children solve problems, work with others and respond to challenges.

Students should still practice, work hard and meet academic standards.

But schools should also make room for social, emotional and ethical skills.

A report card is helpful, but it is only one part of the bigger picture.
