Odisha Imposes Fishing Ban to Protect Olive Ridley Turtles
The government in Odisha has stopped fishing near three river mouths for seven months.
This is to help baby turtles called olive ridleys safely lay their eggs and grow.
These turtles are very important, and sometimes fishing boats hurt them or get them caught in nets.
The fishing ban is in place to keep them safe during this special time.
However, some fishermen are unhappy because they cannot fish for so long.
They want the ban to be shorter and want more money to help them while they can't work.
The government is working with fishermen and police to make sure the turtles are protected.
Odisha government has enforced a seven-month fishing ban at three river mouths to protect olive ridley turtles.
The ban prohibits fishing by motorized vessels and trawlers within 20 km of the coast at Rushikulya, Devi, and Dhamra river mouths.
This conservation measure aims to provide a safe nesting environment for approximately 11 lakh olive ridleys annually.
Traditional fishermen have protested, demanding a reduction in the ban period and an increase in compensation.
Enforcement includes setting up camps and joint patrolling by fishery and marine police departments.
