Japan Rice Imports Surge Due to Shortage, Prices Rise
Imagine Japan needs more rice than it has.
This is causing the price of rice to go up, like when your favorite candy gets expensive!
To fix this, Japan is buying a lot more rice from other countries, like the United States.
This is a big change because they usually don't buy this much.
The government is also selling some of its stored rice to stores to help keep prices from getting too high.
However, if the price of new rice stays expensive, Japan might need to buy even more rice from other countries.
Japan's rice imports surged to a multi-year high in May due to a domestic shortage.
Imports reached 10,605 tons, a significant increase from 115 tons the previous year.
The United States was the primary source of imports, followed by Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Soaring domestic prices are causing issues for consumers and retailers.
The government began direct sales of stockpiled rice to alleviate the situation.
