Cenovus in Talks with Indigenous Groups for MEG Energy Bid
Cenovus Energy, a big oil company, is talking with Indigenous groups in Canada about buying MEG Energy.
The Indigenous groups might buy part of MEG with help from the government.
If this works, it would be the first big time Indigenous groups have directly invested in an oil sands company.
Another company, Strathcona Resources, already offered to buy MEG, but MEG's board said no.
The deal involves companies based in Calgary that work in Alberta's oil-rich region.
Cenovus Energy is in talks with Indigenous groups to jointly bid for MEG Energy.
Indigenous groups, including Chipewyan Prairie First Nation and Heart Lake First Nation, may take a C$2 billion stake.
The Indigenous stake would be backed by government financial support.
A joint offer could be made as early as September, though talks may fail.
MEG was subject to an unsolicited C$6 billion bid from Strathcona Resources Ltd.
