NMC Expands Medical College Rules
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has changed its rules to allow both non-profit and for-profit companies to set up medical colleges.
This change is expected to make medical education more accessible to everyone.
The NMC chairman, Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, said this will help use resources better for medical education.
He also mentioned that hospitals run under this new model will offer free or subsidised treatment.
The NMC is working to improve medical education quality by making clinical research compulsory and using new technologies like Artificial Intelligence.
Additionally, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh has approved the establishment of a new government medical college in Piduguralla, Palnadu district, with 100 seats and a 600-bed teaching hospital.
NMC has removed the regulation restricting only non-profit companies from setting up medical colleges.
Both non-profit and for-profit companies can now establish medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The NMC believes this will enable efficient utilisation of resources for medical education.
Hospitals under the PPP model will be under state government purview, offering free or subsidised treatment.
NMC has formulated its own accreditation process and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure quality.
