Beautiful Snails Face Threats From Collectors and Mining
Some snails have shells that look like colourful artwork.
The Cuban painted snail lives only in eastern Cuba and can have many bright colours.
People collect its shells, so the snail is in danger.
The candy cane snail has stripes and lives in trees in the Caribbean.
Another article describes a flamingo tongue snail whose colourful spots come from its soft body, not its shell.
Other snails mentioned include the ridged precious wentletrap, pale albino giant African land snail, metallic scaly-foot snail, jeweled top snail and violet sea snail.
The scaly-foot snail lives very deep in the Indian Ocean and uses iron in its shell.
The articles show that unusual beauty can attract collectors or expose animals to other threats.

The Caribbean candy cane snail has white shells with three to six colourful spiral bands and lives on trees.
One article features the flamingo tongue snail, precious wentletrap and albino giant African land snail, while another highlights the scaly-foot, jeweled top and violet sea snails.
The scaly-foot snail has an iron-infused, armour-like shell and faces threats from deep-sea mining near hydrothermal vents.
The articles say human fascination with beautiful shells can contribute to over-collection, habitat destruction and conservation risks.
