Operator-Founders Bet Big on AI Startups
A lot of experienced business leaders in India are starting new companies that use artificial intelligence.
These leaders, called operator-founders, have worked in big companies and know how to manage teams and make businesses successful.
A recent report shows that one in four new startups led by these experienced leaders is focused on AI.
This is the first time AI has become the most popular area for these founders.
Investors are also very interested in these startups, giving them a lot of money to grow.
In fact, these operator-led startups got 11% of all the funding for tech startups in India in 2025, even though they make up less than 1% of all new tech startups.
The report also found that these startups are raising more money than the average startup in India.
While AI is the most popular area for new startups led by experienced founders, investors are still putting more money into older, more established areas.
Outside of AI, the biggest areas for these startups are fintech, retail tech, and transportation.
One in four operator-led startups founded in 2025 is an AI company.
Funding for operator-led startups increased nearly 12-fold from 2023 to 2025.
Operator-led startups attracted 11% of total tech startup funding in 2025.
Average seed funding for operator-led startups is $2.4 million, higher than the broader market.
AI startups rank fourth by funding raised, despite being the largest sector for operator-led startups.
