Washington tells countries to pick sides in AI race

The United States and China are competing to lead the world in artificial intelligence, or AI, which is technology that lets computers learn and solve problems.

The US started a group called Pax Silica to work with friendly countries on AI, computer chips, and special minerals.

Now the US wants countries to pick just one side: either work with the US or work with China.

The US prepared a letter to 35 countries that signed a statement about AI cooperation.

The letter says countries cannot be part of both groups at the same time.

One US official said, 'You can't have it both ways.'

China started its own group, the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, in July.

Kazakhstan is the only country that joined both groups, and this worries US officials.

China's embassy in Washington said the US approach is unfair and could slow down AI progress for everyone.

The two countries are also competing over special minerals and computer chips needed to build AI.
