Maharashtra FDA Inspects Court Canteens Amid Selective Crackdown Concerns
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) checked three canteens inside the Bombay High Court after judges asked if the FDA was only targeting private restaurants.
All three canteens had problems.
Two were not allowed to operate because they didn't have the right licence, so they were told to stop.
The third had a licence but still needed to fix some hygiene issues.
The judges told the FDA to also check canteens in government buildings like the Mantralaya.
The FDA promised it would treat all food places the same, whether they are private or run by the government.
The state has already inspected over a thousand food places, stopped many restaurants, and seized a lot of bad food.
Maharashtra FDA inspected three Bombay High Court canteens after judges raised concerns about selective enforcement.
All three canteens had violations; two lacked FSSAI licences and were ordered to shut down, the third received an improvement notice.
The court directed the FDA to inspect government and semi‑government canteens, including those at Mantralaya, and report findings.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe pledged uniform enforcement, stating no institution would be exempt from food safety laws.
The statewide crackdown has led to 1,131 inspections, 56 restaurant licence suspensions, and Rs 50 crore worth of seized food products.
