Bengal Temples Preserve Durga’s 12- to 18-Armed Forms

Bengal Temples Preserve Durga’s 12- to 18-Armed Forms

Most people know Durga as a goddess with ten arms.

In some old temples in western West Bengal, she is shown with 12, 16 or 18 arms.

These idols are connected to old religious texts and family traditions.

The Jhareswar Nath Temple and Radha Damodar Temple have especially notable 18-armed idols.

The Mrinmoyee Temple in Bishnupur is linked to a Durga Puja tradition said to date back to 997 AD.

These unusual forms are called names such as Mahalakshmi Chandi or Raj Rajeshwari.

Researchers say the tradition survived because of strong Shakta and Tantric influences in the region.

Some modern clubs are now bringing the multi-armed forms back into public celebrations.
