Iranian Toman Hits Record Low as Food Prices Soar

Iran’s money, called the toman, has lost a lot of value.

The dollar now sells for 200,000 tomans in Iran’s free market.

This is the lowest level reported for the currency.

Prices across the country are also rising quickly.

Official figures put Iran’s yearly inflation rate at 61.4%.

Food prices rose even faster, increasing 128.1% compared with the previous year.

This means families must pay much more for groceries.

The currency decline is happening amid US sanctions and is putting pressure on Iranian households.
