Youth groups march in Chennai demanding protection of wetlands
Youth groups in Chennai marched to protect wetlands.
They are worried about a project called the Mamallan Reservoir, which they say will harm the environment.
The government is going ahead with the project, but the young people think it's unfair and will hurt the poorest communities.
They want the government to stop and think about the damage it might cause.
They believe protecting wetlands is important for their future.
30 youth organizations marched in Chennai demanding protection of wetlands.
The march was against the Mamallan Reservoir project, which they claim will convert a tidal marsh into a freshwater reservoir.
Protesters allege the government has expedited the project despite scientific and public concerns.
They argue that marginalized groups bear the environmental and economic costs while the benefits flow elsewhere.
The protesters see this as a fight for a liveable future.
