India Pauses Chabahar Port Funding Amid US Sanctions
India has decided not to put any money into the Chabahar port in Iran this year.
This is because the US is putting pressure on Iran with sanctions, and India is worried about getting in trouble.
The port is very important for India to connect with Afghanistan and other countries without going through Pakistan.
Some people think India is just taking a break to figure things out, while others worry it might be pulling out completely.
If India leaves, China might take over the port.
India has already spent a lot of money on the port and is talking to the US to find a way to keep working on it.
India has not allocated any funding for the Chabahar port project in the 2026 budget, a shift from previous years.
The decision comes amid US pressure on Iran and concerns over sanctions, with a waiver set to expire on April 26, 2026.
India had previously allocated Rs 100 crore (£9.3m) for the port, later revised to Rs 400 crore.
India signed a 10-year agreement with Iran in 2024 to operate the Shahid Beheshti terminal, committing significant investments.
The port is a key part of India's regional connectivity strategy, including the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
