Osmansagar Reservoir Sees Unprecedented Inflows, More Gates Opened Than Himayatsagar
Imagine two bathtubs, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, that usually get filled by rain.
Normally, the Himayatsagar bathtub fills up much faster and needs its drain opened more often.
But this year, something unusual is happening!
The Osmansagar bathtub is also getting a lot of rain water, more than expected.
Because of this, the people in charge had to open many more of Osmansagar's drains (called crest gates) than Himayatsagar's drains.
They opened almost all 15 of Osmansagar's drains to let the extra water flow out.
This is a very rare event for Osmansagar, which usually stays quite empty.
Even though Himayatsagar is still getting more water overall, Osmansagar is the one needing more gates opened right now.
Osmansagar reservoir is experiencing unprecedented inflows, a rare event compared to its usual state.
For the first time this season, officials had to open almost all 15 of Osmansagar's crest gates to release water.
More gates were opened at Osmansagar than at the neighboring Himayatsagar reservoir, contrary to typical patterns.
Osmansagar is currently receiving approximately 700 cusecs of inflows and releasing water into the Musi river.
The water level at Osmansagar is close to its full tank level, with 10 gates open on Tuesday to manage excess water.
