California Woman Accused of Spying on Taiwan President’s Son
The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang at an airport in California before she was expected to fly to China.
She is accused of working for a foreign government without registering with the United States.
Investigators say she and an associate went to the Seattle area in 2025 and watched Lai Ting-yu and his family.
Lai Ting-yu is the son of Taiwan’s president.
The complaint says Zhang sent photos, videos and car license plate numbers to contacts she believed worked for the Chinese government.
Investigators say she used WeChat to communicate with them.
Taiwan’s government condemned the alleged actions and thanked the United States for its help.
Zhang has been charged, but the allegations have not been proven in court.
