Transmission Delays Hamper India's Green Energy Push
India wants to build a lot of clean energy like solar and wind power by 2032.
But there's a problem: the power lines that carry this energy aren't being built fast enough.
This means some clean energy is being wasted because there's no room on the power lines.
A big company called PGCIL is in charge of building most of these lines, but they can't do it all alone.
The government needs to help by letting more companies build these lines and making it easier to get the necessary permissions.
This way, all the clean energy can be used, and India can reach its green goals.
India aims to build 650 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, but transmission infrastructure is lagging.
Curtailment of renewable energy is happening due to transmission congestion, with 4 GW wasted in Rajasthan alone.
PGCIL dominates the transmission market, handling 57% of projects, leading to delays and systemic risks.
Project delays of 18-24 months are common, with key projects like the Rajasthan solar evacuation scheme still incomplete.
Solutions include decentralizing transmission development, introducing market share limits, and streamlining clearances.
