Nepal Flood Damage Assessment May Take Up To Week
Severe flash floods have affected remote parts of Nepal.
Rescue workers are trying to reach people in valleys and places cut off by the floods.
The mountains are steep, and the river areas are narrow, making rescues difficult.
Too many aircraft in the area are also slowing operations.
The Nepal Army says almost 1,000 people have been rescued.
This includes 82 Indian citizens.
Officials say it may take about a week to understand the full number of deaths and the extent of the damage.
Nepal is checking the damage before asking other countries for specific help.
The situation may take about a week to become more normal.
Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel says the floods’ full death toll and damage may take up to a week to establish.
Rescue teams have saved nearly 1,000 people, including 82 Indians, from remote and cut-off areas.
Steep slopes, narrow river gorges and air-traffic congestion are slowing rescue operations.
Around 400 rescued people are being cared for by local authorities in Trishuli.
Nepal is assessing the damage before deciding what financial, technical or other assistance to request from India and other friendly nations.
