India Advances J&K Hydro Projects After Indus Water Treaty Suspension
India is moving forward with several hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir after putting the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan on hold.
These projects aim to increase the amount of electricity generated and the amount of water stored.
The projects include the Kirthai 2, Uri 1 Stage II, Dulhasti Stage II, and Tulbul.
The Kirthai 2 project will have design changes that may decrease power generation but increase water storage.
The Tulbul project will resume with an increased storage capacity.
These projects are expected to cost between ₹10,000 crore and ₹28,000 crore.
The suspension of the treaty allows India to expedite and expand the projects.
India is advancing four key hydropower projects in J&K after the Indus Water Treaty suspension.
The projects are Kirthai 2, Tulbul, Uri 1 Stage II, and Dulhasti Stage II.
Kirthai 2 project design changes have been approved, potentially increasing storage.
The Tulbul navigation project on the Jhelum will resume, increasing storage capacity.
The total cost of the projects is estimated between ₹10,000 crore and ₹28,000 crore.
