US Threatens Higher Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil
President Donald Trump said the US might put higher taxes on things India sells to the US if India keeps buying oil from Russia.
He said this while talking to reporters.
He also mentioned that India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is a good person and wants to make Trump happy.
The US has already put a 50% tax on some Indian goods, partly because India buys oil from Russia.
Meanwhile, there are some problems between the US and Venezuela, a country with lots of oil.
But India doesn't buy much oil from Venezuela anymore, so it won't affect India much.
India used to buy a lot of oil from Venezuela, but that changed because of US rules.
Now, if those rules change, it might help some Indian companies that have investments in Venezuela's oil fields.
The Congress party in India criticized Modi's approach to diplomacy, saying that his personal friendship with Trump hasn't stopped the US from threatening higher tariffs.
They argue that India's foreign policy should be based on strong institutions, not just personal relationships.
US President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on India if it does not reduce Russian oil purchases.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Modi's personal diplomacy, stating it has not prevented economic pressure from the US.
The US has imposed a 50% tariff on India, with 25% as punishment for buying Russian crude.
India maintains that purchasing discounted Russian crude is a sovereign decision for energy security.
US-Venezuela tensions are unlikely to significantly impact India due to minimal oil imports from Venezuela.
